Autograph
Rock is located on a privately owned ranch in Cimarron County.
Access is restricted. Permission must be obtained prior to each
visit, and is granted by the site's owners through the Cimarron
Heritage Center. The site is closed for the winter, usually from
October-April. High fire danger or ranch operations may require
temporary closures. There are no restrooms, picnic facilities
or trash receptacles.
Autograph Rock is a certified site of the Santa Fe National Historic
Trail. The landowners, the Cimarron Heritage Center, and the National Park Service have all joined
together to ensure the continued preservation of this site.
The reliable water source of a live spring has lured people to
Autograph Rock for thousands of years. But, it was the opening
of trade between Mexico and the United States in 1821 that brought
hundreds of travelers through Cimarron County on the Santa Fe
Trail. The soft sandstone rock contains over 800 names of some
of these travelers. Names such as F.B. Delgado, J.D. Ochoa, Julian
Sandoval, W.H. Abbott, C.C. Calvin, and T. Potter are an example
of the rich cultural interchange the Santa Fe Trail forged through
business partnerships and travel.
As of Dec.,
2007 this site is closed to visitors! We are in a drought
situation and the ranch has already been hit by wildfires--so no
trespassing or visiting at this time.
